Ways Healthcare Differs Depending on the State an Immigrant Child Resides In | ATS 2024
Undocumented individuals are ineligible for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or federally funded Medicaid, but some states offer state-sponsored coverage for certain immigration statuses, such as Temporary Protected Status.
Even though undocumented immigrants are ineligible to apply for Medicaid, they have some other options, Julie M. Linton, M.D., FAAP, immediate past chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Immigrant Child and Family Health, explains in an interview at the American Thoracic Society 2024.
"Some states have done a couple of things around Medicaid and CHIP, for instance, and they've done that both for children and some have also done so for pregnant people," Linton explains. "Undocumented people have state-sponsored coverage in several states. Many states have also taken up CHIPRA which means that children who are living in those states who have lawful presence are eligible for insurance immediately."
