The study's results were presented today at the American Society of Retina Specialists meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, by Parisi Emami-Naeini, M.D., M.P.H., a retina specialist at the Tschannen Eye Institute at the UC Davis Eye Center.

They analyzed data from the Medicare Fee-For-Service Provider Utilization and Payment database between 2013 and 2021, using the Current Procedural Terminology codes.
The procedures they studied included pars plana vitrectomy, scleral buckle, pneumatic retinopexy, photocoagulation and cryotherapy.
They found that pars plana vitrectomy was the most frequently performed procedure and proportional utilization of pars plana vitrectomy increased 22.1% during the study period while the proportion of scleral buckle decreased by 55.3%.
