Gen Z workers have a less positive outlook about the healthcare field than their older counterparts, according to the results of a new national survey by WellSky.

Despite an overall positive perception of the healthcare field, generational opinions differ, particularly in terms of communication style and career planning, according to the results of “Addressing today’s healthcare workforce challenges: Results from a national study,” done by WellSky.

The study consisted of approximately 1,200 participants, including 400 nurses, 400 healthcare workers and 400 workers open to a career in healthcare. Results were gathered in March 2025.

While Gen Z workers are more likely to seek career growth opportunities than older employees, they are less likely to voice their concerns in the workplace at 85%, compared with 94% of Gen X and 93% of Millennials.

“Healthcare career decisions are being made every day, whether it’s an experienced nurse debating between staying or leaving the field or a new graduate choosing where to begin the job hunt,” Bill Miller, chairman and CEO of WellSky, said in the news release. “As competition for staff intensifies, it’s essential for leaders to understand and respond to the unique expectations and challenges each generation brings to healthcare.”
