In this interview, Luis Ortiz, M.D., explains how narcolepsy type 1 is now diagnosed and how it differs from type 2.

The diagnostic criteria for narcolepsy type 1 have undergone some changes within the last few years, and it is important that physicians are kept up-to-date for their patients, many of whom wait years for a diagnosis, according to Luis Ortiz, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, located in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

In this recent interview with Managed Healthcare Executive, he explained how the diagnostic process has evolved and where narcolepsy type 2 comes into play.

Ortiz presented today at the 2026 annual meeting of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) in Nashville, Tennessee. It is being held from April 13 - 16.

He spoke during a session called, ‘Advancing Patient-Centered Care in Narcolepsy Type 1: Integrating the Latest Evidence, Guidelines, and Treatment Innovations.’
