Author(s)Logan Lutton

In 2024, U.S. health care spending rose to $5.3 trillion, driven by increased per capita use and demand for medical services as utilization rebounded following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The United States spent $5.3 trillion on health care in 2024, an estimated equivalent of $15,474 per person, according to an analysis published in Health Affairs by the National Health Statistics Group in the Office of the Actuary at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Micah Hartman, statistician in the National Health Services Group at CMS and lead author of the study, and Don Metz, interim editor-in-chief and executive publisher of Health Affairs, co-hosted a press briefing yesterday to share the report highlights.
