HHS indicates that the 834 is still a work in progress.
In the November 13 press conference announcing that 106,185 consumers had made a health plan selection on the exchanges, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius indicated that the 834 is still a work in progress.
“Prioritizing insurer fixes has been at the top of our punch list because not only do we want to make sure that when people complete the process we get to the companies the names of individuals that want to enroll in their plans, the so-called 834 transfer but also we are eager to get a process of direct enrollment up and running ASAP. So that is certainly part of the commitment to make sure that people are transferred easily to insurers and that we actually have a process where insurance companies can be very much engaged and involved in the enrollment process. And that’s been at the top of the list. We’ve made some real progress. We’re not where we need to be quite yet but again it’s a very high commitment.”
