CVS Health is splitting in two, according to news reports
The retail pharmacies will be in one company and Aetna and CVS Caremark, the PBM, in another, according to news reports.
Healthcare giant CVS Health is separating itself into two separate companies, the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times are reporting.
The split, which is scheduled to happen in 2028, will result in two companies, one with the 9,000 retail pharmacies and the mail-order pharmacy business and the other with Aetna, the insurance business, and the pharmacy benefit manager (PBM), CVS Caremark, plus Signify Health, the home healthcare business, and the specialty pharmacy, according to the Journal.
The Financial Times broke the news about the restructuring. The newspaper qualified its scoop with the caution that the “structure and timeline of the break-up were still in flux and could yet change.”
News of the CVS Health dividing itself comes as lawmakers are beginning to focus on vertical integration in healthcare and the influence of companies such as CVS Health and UnitedHealth Group. Arkansas and Tennessee have passed laws that would prohibit PBMs from owning pharmacies.
This is a developing story.
