The Healthcare Services Immigrant Children Need the Most | ATS 2024

Immigrant children need a variety of resources when they come to the United States.

There are several things immigrant children need when they arrive in the United States. Julie M. Linton, M.D., FAAP, immediate past chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Immigrant Child and Family Health, explains in an interview at the American Thoracic Society 2024.

The needs of each child depend on the area in the country of origin that they come from, whether that be a rural or urban area.

"Many people coming from under-resourced settings have particular infectious exposures that they may have encountered not only in their country of origin but also en route due to the conditions that we've placed them in," Linton said. "I might also think about acute worsening of any chronic condition that they have. If they were on treatment, making sure we get them back on it."

Immigrant children may also need access to help with chronic conditions they are unaware of or were unable to treat previously.
