In this Managed Healthcare Executive podcast, Shekhar Khera, senior vice president, product management at RxBenefits, discusses the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on healthcare, emphasizing its role in enhancing human decision-making rather than replacing jobs. Khera highlights the AI-fueled shift from rudimentary data processing to interpreting complex data at scale, enabling better insights that support decisions that lead to better outcomes. Khera stresses the importance of a unified semantic layer for AI to understand business contexts and the need for transparent, explainable AI models. Khera also outlines RxBenefits’ robust, strategic approach to AI investments that zero in on scalable, agile solutions that reduce cognitive load and improve efficiency.

“For the last decade, healthcare has invested in digital transactions,” Khera says. “The next three to five years will be about transforming experiences for members, pharmacists, clinicians, employers and service teams by weaving AI into the environment in a safe, trusted way, with humans deeply in the loop around the experiences we wish to achieve.”

Khera joined RxBenefits in 2022 and oversees both the product and information technology organizations. He has more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry. He resides in Chicago with his wife and son.

Peter Wehrwein, managing editor of Managed Healthcare Executive, conducted the interview.
