Justin Jasniewski, MBA, shared a story about his career turning point and how it involved a rejected proposal and a Big Three PBM seven-figure check.
Justin Jasniewski, MBA, is the CEO at Serve You Rx, a midmarket pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) for self-funded employers. As one of this year’s Managing Healthcare Executive Emerging Leaders in Healthcare, he recently sat down with us to discuss a turning point in his career, what he would change about U.S. healthcare and his personal goal for this year.
Jasniewski’s career turning point occurred during his early days at Serve You Rx, when he was doing new business underwriting. In this role, he was able to see what employers were paying for their PBM and how Serve You Rx could provide the same services and drugs. He recalled preparing a proposal for an employee group of more than 1,000 individuals at a rate of 40% less than their current PBM. However, the deal fell through when the client's PBM wrote them a seven-figure check to not consider other options.
“That moment stuck with me,” Jasniewski said in a video interview. “It exposed how deeply broken the system is and how many employers don’t even realize how bad the deal they’re getting really is. If a PBM can write a seven-figure check on the spot without blinking, what does that say about the pricing in the first place? That experience has shaped my mission ever since: to shine a light on these practices, give employers real choice, and challenge the status quo that so often puts profits ahead of patients.”
Jasniewski said that if he could change one thing about U.S. healthcare, it would be to realign financial incentives across the healthcare ecosystem to prioritize outcomes and value rather than service volume. He followed up by saying the current healthcare system creates too much waste and frustration and should instead be focusing on improving patient health.
As his personal goal this year, Jasniewski would like to complete his second triathlon.
