Artificial intelligence use in healthcare is on the rise in the United States. To ensure it remains safe, secure and trustworthy, the White House drafted a pledge called the White House Healthcare AI Commitments, originally published on Dec. 14, 2023.

Since then, 37 payers and providers have shown solidarity with the following five official statements:

  1. We commit to vigorously developing AI solutions to optimize healthcare delivery and payment by advancing health equity, expanding access, making healthcare more affordable, importing outcomes through more coordinated care, improving patient experience, and reducing clinician burnout.
  2. We will work with our peers and partners to ensure outcomes are aligned with fair, appropriate, valid, effective, and safe (FAVES) AI principals.
  3. We will deploy trust mechanisms that inform users if the content is largely AI-generated and not reviewed or edited by a human.
  4. We will adhere to a risk management framework that includes comprehensive tracking of applications powered by frontier models and accounts for potential harms and steps to mitigate them.
  5. We will research, investigate, and develop swiftly but will do so responsibly.

As of yesterday, Independence Blue Cross (IBX) is the latest organization to add its name to the list.

“Independence Blue Cross continues to lead the way in health care innovation. We are dedicated to advocating for advancements that improve care delivery, user experience, and affordability,” Mike Vennera, executive vice president and chief strategy, development, and information officer for Independence Blue Cross said in a news release. “We’re proud to have a seat at the table, among other policy experts and national thought leaders.”

Other notable names on the list include CVS Health, Tufts Medicine, Boston Children's Hospital, Duke Health, UC Davis Health, Allina Health and Ceders-Sinai.
