In a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and published in the February 20 Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers concluded that more than 4.5 million U.S. adults used prescription weight loss pills during 1996-1998. One out of four was not overweight when the pills were prescribed. Less than 50 percent of physicians counseled overweight persons about weight control.
