High costs and the novelty and complexity of new therapies such as gene therapy present social determinants of health and health literacy challenges, says Tiara Green, president of Accessia Health

In this segment of an interview with Managed Healthcare Executive, Tiara Green, M.S. Ed., president of Accessia Health, said the high cost of specialty pharmacy drugs makes social determinants of health especially relevant. "When we think about social determinants of health, we are talking about those factors that are going to impede individuals from accessing their healthcare." Green cited transportation as one such factor. She also spoke about the challenges posed by high-cost gene therapies. Will people have access to even know about these therapies, she asked rhetorically. "How do we ensure that individuals take care into their own hands to do the research or even know how to do the research to make informed healthcare decisions in partnership with their physicians?"
