Cassie Houff, MBA, says the most impactful change for U.S. healthcare would be “an overhaul to the fee-for-service payment system,” arguing that it doesn’t incentivize timely or necessary care.
Cassie Houff, MBA, vice president of postacute care solutions at OneHome, is one of this year’s Managed Healthcare Executive Emerging Leaders in Healthcare.
MHE editors asked each leader to answer three questions in a video interview that they also responded to in writing: What was a turning point in your career? If you could change one thing about U.S. healthcare, what would it be? And what is a personal goal for this year?
For Houff, the biggest career pivot came when she transitioned from the payer side of the healthcare industry into the home care space.
"That was in 2016, 2017,” she said. "It was kind of a new idea for payers to think about working more in the provider space and how to impact patient outcomes in that way."
The move opened the door to what she now calls a "multifaceted post-acute career," which continues to energize her today.
When asked what she would change about U.S. healthcare, Houff said the "most single impactful thing we could do is create some kind of overhaul to the fee-for-service payment system."
Houff said she believes the current model doesn’t support the kind of proactive, value-driven care that clinicians are trying to deliver.
"If we can really create a better aligned system," she added, "everyone who got into this space to drive those positive outcomes will reap benefits—both payers, providers, and ultimately, patients."
Outside of work, Houff shared she keeps busy with her three young kids and aims to be fully present in their lives.
"Each year, I spend a lot of time focused on what their interests are and how to be present and get that one point in time for the age that they’re at," she said.
Houff also enjoys international and stateside travel, and whenever time allows, she can be found tackling DIY projects around the house.
