Michael Thompson on Employers Taking a Much Harder Look at Their PBMs | 2023 PBMI Annual National Conference

News
Article

Thompson, the president and CEO of the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions, said rebates and pass through are just the “tip of the iceberg” of the misalignment between employers and PBMs that disadvantages employers.

In a brief interview after speaking at the 2023 PBMI conference, Thompson also discussed the fiduciary responsibilities of employers and the conflicts of interest that many consultants who advise employers about their PBM contracts have.

“What is increasingly concerning … the advisers themselves are not working for the employers, they are actually working for the PBMs, because they are actually getting paid more by the PBM than they are getting paid by the employers. And it is a huge part of their business model and creates conflicts that probably creep into why they do things the way they do them. If you are looking for someone to take an independent look they got to be independent,” Thompson said.
