Munson will succeed Paul A. Tufano, who served as the company’s CEO for almost a decade.
Beginning February 1, Kelly A. Munson will officially take on the role of president and CEO of AmeriHealth Caritas, a provider of Medicaid managed care and other healthcare solutions.
Munson will succeed Paul A. Tufano, who served as the company’s CEO for almost a decade.
Munson
Tufano stepped down in September 2023 and was temporarily replaced by Thomas Hutton, executive vice president and general counsel, as interim CEO while the search was under way.
Munson joins AmeriHealth Caritas from Aetna Medicaid, a CVS Health Company, where she most recently served as president and oversaw the company’s $18.5 billion Medicaid program, with 2.8 million members across 16 states. While at Aetna, she also led initiatives promoting employee engagement and career advancement.
Before Aetna, she was executive vice president and chief Medicaid officer at WellCare. Munson also chaired the board of directors of Medicaid Health Plans of America.
Gregory E. Deavens, president and CEO of Independence Health Group and chair of the board of directors of AmeriHealth Caritas said Munson brings knowledge and expertise in leading Medicaid managed care plans.
For more than 40 years, AmeriHealth Caritas has provided healthcare across 13 states and the District of Columbia, according to their website. Serving around 5 million members, including those in Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP, and the Health Insurance Marketplace, the health plan offers integrated managed care, pharmaceutical benefits, specialty pharmacy services and behavioral health support.
Recently, AmeriHealth has expanded its community access initiatives, including honoring payments made towards 2023 plan year deductibles and out-of-pocket caps for former Friday Health Plans members in North Carolina who enrolled with AmeriHealth Caritas Next during a special enrollment period last year.
In December 2023, AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia introduced the Community Partners Program, focusing on enhancing children's health.
Another example includes its AmeriHealth Caritas' Community HealthChoices health plans granting more than $355,000 to the Pennsylvania Homecare Association in November 2023 to eligible members in Pennsylvania.
