Despite advances, patient safety is still an issue in many hospitals.
To help get a sense of how hospitals rank for patient safety, Leapfrog, a non-profit organization promoting transparency in the U.S. healthcare system, publishes a list of hospitals and ranks them with a letter grade. The 28 metrics used in the analysis include staff responsiveness, electronic prescribing, and healthcare associated infections. States are then ranked by how many of their hospitals received an “A” ranking. The lowest, North Dakota, had 0% of its hospitals receive an “A” rank, while the highest, Oregon, had 58% of its hospitals receive top marks.
