Providence CMO Rex Hoffman, M.D., MBA, reflects on building a career in healthcare leadership

A former radiation oncologist turned chief medical officer, Rex Hoffman, M.D., MBA, has spent the past several years expanding his leadership footprint across Providence Holy Cross Medical Center’s health system while authoring multiple books aimed at helping physicians navigate the transition into executive roles.

Rex Hoffman, M.D., MBA, is the chief medical officer at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center. He began his healthcare career in 2001 as a radiation oncologist, taking on more leadership responsibilities as the years went on. He became the CMO of Providence in 2019, after completing a business and medicine program at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business.

Since stepping into his role as CMO, he has written several books about healthcare leadership, including ‘I Want to Be a Chief Medical Officer, Now What?’ and most recently, ‘Difficult Dilemmas for Chief Medical Officers: 30 Case Studies.’

Hoffman is set to speak at Managed Healthcare Executive’s 2026 Health System Executive Summit, held on October 16, 2026, in San Francisco.
