Approximately four million people used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons in 1999, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The institute's analysis of U.S. prescription drug use problems appears in the March/April Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association. The study estimates that total economic costs from drug misuse top $177 billion a year.
