There was a record-breaking total of 725 breaches in 2023.
In 2023, over 124 million health records were breached in a total of 725 hacking incidents, making it the worst year ever for attacks, according to a study done by The HIPAA Journal. Most (69%) of the information was accessed via network servers.
There has been an increase in attacks every year except for 2015. Healthcare leaders are taking steps to prevent these events from taking place in the future.
In January 2024, the Healthcare and Public Health Sector Cybersecurity Goals were released. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) hopes to obtain funding to help low-income organizations stay safe.
The incident must be reported to the HHS Office for Civil Rights within 60 days of the breach discovery to meet the requirements. This means rates may be even higher than previously thought.
