Changes within the physician labor market can directly impact the success of hospitals and health systems, according to a new study.
The “U.S. Physician Employment Report 2019,” from Doximity, analyzed 27,000 physician job postings between 2018 and 2019 in the top metros across the country. It also identified which specialties are the highest in demand.
The report found that national physician employment opportunities grew by 5% since 2018. It also showed that family and internal medicine were the specialties most in demand and the cities that drove overall physician demand are areas that are not considered to be typical medical hubs such as El Paso, Texas, Miami, Florida, and Cleveland.
“Executives looking to expand specific practices, build out their overall physician network or maintain their existing physicians should consider the areas and specialties that are most in demand,” says Amit Phull, MD, VP of strategy and insights, Doximity, the largest professional medical network, located in San Francisco. “This can help them better understand the competition in their area and adjust compensation rates accordingly.”
The report also includes an analysis of physician job opportunities in telemedicine. Between 2015 and 2018, the number of physicians who have self-reported telemedicine as a skill doubled. The report found internal medicine and psychiatry were the telemedicine specialties most in demand.
